The History Center of Cheboygan County

Founded in 1969, the History Center of Cheboygan County, houses almost 9,000 artifacts that chronicle the history of Cheboygan County. Whether you live in Cheboygan or are just visiting, we promise to entice, educate, and entertain you with the stories of our past and our dreams for the future. The History Center consists  of three buildings open to the public.

Spies Heritage Hall

Delve into the rich tapestry of history at Spies Heritage Hall, a captivating museum that brings to life the diverse and intriguing periods of our county. Immerse yourself in a world of awe-inspiring exhibits that vividly portray the stories and essence of times long gone by.

Sheriff’s House & Jail

The original Cheboygan jailhouse and  sheriff’s quarters. The home section is of Italianate architecture and has many interior furnishings of the Victorian era. The kitchen, dining room and parlor downstairs have displays making them typical of the early 1900’s. Upstairs, there’s a master bedroom, child’s room and a sewing room.

Native American Log Cabin

A historic settlers log cabin, once occupied by an Indian family in an Indian village on the shore of Burt Lake, is set back amongst the trees. The furnishings reflect the changing life style of the Northern Michigan Indians, as taught them by the Missionaries, and similar to the homesteaders’ homes of the late 1800s.
